Ceremony honours workplace deaths

Nanaimo, Duncan and District Labour Council invites Nanaimo residents to join them in commemorating the Day of Mourning on Thursday (April 28).

Last year in B.C., 143 workers lost their lives as a result of workplace injuries or occupational diseases.

The Day of Mourning, which remembers those who have lost their lives due to their jobs, has grown into a worldwide event observed by unions, central labour bodies, labour councils, municipalities and national governments in nearly 100 countries.

The Nanaimo area Day of Mourning ceremony takes place at Pioneer Plaza near the intersection of Front and Bastion streets at 1:30 p.m. Guest speakers include Jessica Vliegenthart, a Paralympic athlete; Ellen Oxman, president of the Nanaimo, Duncan and District Labour Council; and Mohinder Bhatti, an investigating officer for WorkSafeBC.

To get a Day of Mourning Flag to display, please call the labour council office at 250-760-0547.
