A man has been charged in connection to an incident last Thursday in Abbotsford, where another man was forced into a bank under orders to withdraw cash.
Darin Eggen has been charged with robbery, extortion, kidnapping, assault with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm against the 34-year-old male victim. Eggen was also charged with kidnapping and extortion of a 31-year-old female.
At about 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, the 34-year-old man was robbed, knocked unconscious and forced into a vehicle with his girlfriend. They were then driven to a bank in the 32900 block of South Fraser Way by another man and woman.
The victim was told to withdraw cash, but was able to alert the teller to the situation, and the bank called police.
At 5:45 p.m., Abbotsford Police patrol officers, with members of the emergency response team and the major crime unit, raided a home on Peardonville Road west of Parkview, where a 39-year-old man and his girlfriend were located. Eggen was arrested and others in the home were questioned.
According to the provincial court database, Eggen has numerous prior convictions, including for assault, fear of injury by another person, breach, uttering threats, impaired driving, resisting a police officer and drug possession.
On June 27 in Chilliwack provincial court, he is due for a sentencing hearing on charges of theft and fraud.
Const. Ian MacDonald said police are continuing to investigate Thursday’s incident.
