Cherry Lake Fire update

A wildfire fire burning Northwest of Cherry Creek grew in size and is now covering 1250 hectares of forest.

A wildfire fire burning Northwest of Cherry Creek grew in size and is now covering 1250 hectares of forest. BC Wildfire Service reported the fire to be 1000 hectares in size on Aug. 28, but grew 250 hectares by Aug. 29.

The fire has caused closures on certain forest services roads (FSR) in the Cherry Creek area.

“There has been some confusion, some people seem to think the Teepee is closed, but it’s not, it’s the Jim Creek Forest Service Road, which is off of the Teepee Forest Service Road at 34 km,” said Karlie Shaughnessy, a fire communication specialist at the Southeast Fire Centre. The Caven Creek FSR has been closed at the 27 kilometre marker, which also affects Wickman Creek FSR, Larch Creek FSR, and Bloom Creek FSR to kilometre 51.

Shaughnessy reported that the closures will remain in effect until the fire is extinguished.

The fire is not threatening to any structures or communities at this moment and there are no evacuation alerts to be aware of. According to Shaughnessy, the fire was discovered on Aug. 25 and was caused by lightening.

“We have 43 people, six pieces of heavy equipment and seven helicopters working on it,” said Shaughnessy.
