Cherryville residents are fed up with illegal dumping.
There hves been ongoing problems with visitors to the Ministry of Forests’ Sugar Lake recreation sites getting rid of trash in the community.
“There is no place to dispose of garbage at the campsite,” said Eugene Foisy, Cherryville director.
“There has been trash found along Highway 6 and it’s from Calgary and other places.”
There is a concern that the garbage is not only creating pollution but it could draw wild animals into Cherryville.
Businesses in Cherryville have also had their dumpsters filled with campers’ garbage.
The matter was discussed at Thursday’s meeting of the Regional District of North Okanagan’s Electoral Area Advisory Committee.
But Foisy insists the regional district is not responsible for resolving the matter of illegal dumping.
“There are no funds in the regional district to run around and pick up garbage. The province needs to get involved,” he said.
The EAAC will also write MLA Eric Foster and the Ministry of Forests demanding that garbage service be initiated at the Sugar Lake recreation sites.
“The Ministry of Forests is making money off these campsites so they should provide the proper facilities to tourists,” said Foisy.
“The real answer is a dumpster at the campsites.”
