Firefighter food drive, skating events and more are planned to help stock shelves at Chilliwack's food bank

The Chilliwack Fire Department will once again be holding their annual Christmas Food Drive for the Salvation Army.

The Chilliwack Fire Department will once again be holding their annual Christmas Food Drive for the Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army Food Bank is experiencing a troubling shortage of food donations this week, and is appealing to the public to help fill the shelves.

They are mostly in need of canned soup and canned fruit, so that they can in turn give food to those who depend on the Food Bank to get through the month.

There are a number of ways to donate now through the end of the year. Food can be dropped off at the Salvation Army on Yale Road, or in bins at all major grocery stores, and the Chilliwack Progress. But there are numerous annual food drives going on throughout the community as well. The City of Chilliwack is collecting food bank donations at their public meeting on homelessness on Nov. 30 at Evergreen Hall. They are also holding a shred-a-thon at Cottonwood Mall on Dec. 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Non-perishable items can also be brought down to the Rotary Christmas Parade on Dec. 3, and Mayor Sharon Gaetz, council members and the Chilliwack Fire Fighters will collect those as they walk the parade route.

There are Food Bank Skates at Twin Rinks on Dec. 5, 7, 12 and 14, from 3:15 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. And the Chilliwack Fire Department will hold its annual Food Drive on Dec. 5.

More than 3,800 people are helped through the Salvation Army Food Bank, Soup Kitchen and shelter every month, and a third of those are children under the age of 18. The Salvation Army Community Food Bank is a member of The Food Banks British Columbia(FBBC) and affiliated member of theCanadian Association of Food Banks, and is the only authorized Food Bank in the Chilliwack area.
