Chilliwack is marking BC Rivers Day with annual cleanup

Chiliwack Vedder River Cleanup Society is hosting the rain-or-shine river cleanup on Sept. 22

Local river stewards will be marking BC Rivers Day on Sunday by attending the annual cleanup after a summertime of use.

The Chiliwack Vedder River Cleanup Society members are hosting their rain-or-shine cleanup and celebration on Sept. 22, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“This is our largest cleanup of the year!” according to a recent post by CVRCS.

The group started organizing the river cleanups on the Chilliwack Vedder river in 2002, and removing tonnes of trash over the years.

Cleanup registration will be based out of the Chilliwack Fish and Game Club starting at 8:30 a.m.

They are asking cleanup volunteers to bring their own drinking containers for water and coffee.

“We are working very hard to encourage folks to bring their own water bottle or travel mug to our events so we are no longer using single-use containers. We will not be providing cups for coffee or water.”

Registration at the Fish and Game club is for the first hour, BBQ starts at 12:30 p.m. Prize raffle is around 1 p.m. and participants must be present to win.

“World Rivers Day is a celebration of the world’s waterways,” according the the BC Rivers Day organizers. “It highlights the many values of rivers and strives to increase public awareness and hopefully encourage the improved stewardship of rivers around the world.

“Rivers in every country face an array of threats, and only our active involvement will ensure their health in the years ahead.”
