Chilliwack RCMP heard gunfire en route to suspicous activity

Chilliwack man, 42, sent to hospital after shooting, RCMP have confirmed

Chilliwack RCMP have confirmed some of the details of what happened on Fairview Drive on June 3.

A house in the residential neighbourhood became the scene of a standoff with police for several hours. It all began with a report of suspicious activity in the area, said Chilliwack RCMP Cpl. Mike Rail.

“As those frontline officers were en route to the complaint, they heard what they believed to be gunshots,” he said. And as they arrived in the area of the complaint, they were met by a 42-year-old man from Chilliwack who was suffereing from a non-life-threatening injury.

“The man was transported to hospital and the area surrounding the residence was immediately cordoned off by police,” Rail said.

Following that, Rail said “a number of people came out” of the house, as directed by RCMP. One person remained inside, and refused to leave.

Rail said the Emergency Response Team was called in from there to help ensure safety of the community. The final person in the house eventually came out and was arrested.

Rail said nobody was injured during the arrests, and the man hurt earlier in the morning has already been released from the hospital. An investigation into the events is ongoing, he added.
