The library at Chilliwack’s Bernard elementary school will be getting a boost this year through the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation’s Adopt a School program.
The school is home to 280 students in Grades K-5, and it has been ‘adopted’ by Coles in the Cottonwood Shopping Centre.
The bookstore will fundraise on behalf of Bernard elementary and 100 per cent of funds raised will help upgrade the school’s library collection with updated and diverse learning materials. The fundraiser page at indigoloveofreadingfoundation.givecloud.co/fundraisers provides a few paragraphs explaining why Bernard elementary is a high-needs school that needs support.
The goal is to raise $2,800.

“According to the Early Development Instrument (EDI), a tool that measures developmental health of the students entering kindergarten across British Columbia, our students are among the most vulnerable in our district and across the province,” the page notes. “Some of the most concerning data we have received is that 17 percent of our K’s entering school are deemed vulnerable with regard to language development and 16 percent are deemed vulnerable with regard to communication. Another sobering statistic indicates that 87 of our 280 students have vulnerabilities in one or more scales.”
The Indigo Love of Reading Foundation believes that providing access to the right book at the right time can significantly change a child’s life, propelling them toward success in education, and in life.
This year, 153 Canadian high-needs elementary schools have been adopted.
“We have a diverse population attending our school and our desire is to ensure our students know they are valued and cared for, and they are encouraged to learn and grow as we teach them,” the fundraiser page says.
