Chilliwack’s COVID case count drops with rest of province

Case counts are trending down everywhere, even in hot spots like Surrey and Abbotsford

Chilliwack’s COVID case count dropped sharply in the latest report from the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC), following a province-wide trend.

Chilliwack’s local health authority (LHA) recorded 71 cases for the period of May 9-15 after recording 89 cases for the previous seven-day period.

Chilliwack’s count is the lowest it’s been in two months. It dropped down to 67 between March 14-20. Chilliwack is now averaging between 5.1 and 10 cases per 100,000 people, third best of the six categories identified by the BCCDC.

The BCCDC numbers looked promising just about everywhere last week.

Abbotsford’s case count plummeted by almost 100, from 408 to 315, and Mission’s dropped from 89 to 75. Those two LHAs, along with Surrey, are the only true hot-spots remaining in the province, averaging more than 20 cases per 100,000 people.

But even Surrey is showing dramatic improvement with 1,094 cases, down from a high of 1,760 in late April.

Chilliwack’s neighbours to the east saw mixed results. While Hope dropped slightly, from eight to six, Agassiz was one of two LHAs in the southwest corner of BC to see an increase, jumping from one to four. Richmond was the other, going from 107 cases to 108.

Beyond the Lower Mainland, the rest of the province is looking good. There are no hot spots (20-plus cases per 100,000 people) remaining, and only three LHAs (Keremeos, Central Okanagan and Peace River South) are averaging more than 10.1 cases per 100,000 people.
