Chilliwack’s COVID case count rises in latest report from BC Centre for Disease Control

While much of the province is seeing a decline, Chilliwack's number went in the wrong direction

While provincial COVID case counts took a step in the right direction, Chilliwack’s situation looked a little worse in the latest report from the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC).

The BCCDC report on local health authorities (LHAs) for the week of April 18 to 24 found Chilliwack with 121 cases, up 16 from the 105 reported the week prior. Chilliwack’s average per 100,000 people rose to between 15.1 and 20, placing the LHA in the second worst of the six categories put forth by the BCCDC.

Chilliwack was the only LHA in the eastern Fraser Valley to see an increase in cases.

Abbotsford’s count fell slightly, from 492 to 489 while Langley’s decreased from 340 to 303. Closer to Vancouver, the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows and Tri-Cities areas both found their way out of hot-spot status while Surrey continued to be the hottest of hot spots. The BCCDC’s worst category is 20-plus cases per 100,000 people, and Surrey fell into that dubious group again as its case count rose from 1,698 to 1,760.

To the east of Chilliwack, Agassiz bounced back from a bad week, dropping from 20 cases down to three. Hope’s count dropped from four to two.

Things are looking better province wide, though new hot spots have popped up in northeast BC (Fort Nelson and Peace River North/South) and southeast BC (Golden).
