An independent Chilliwack school closed its doors early for the Christmas break due to COVID-19.
John Calvin Christian School posted on their website that they would be closed for the winter break starting Wednesday, Dec. 16 due to the virus.
The school is also now listed as having six days of exposure of COVID-19: Dec. 8, 9, 10, 11, 14 and 15. It is located in Yarrow and was established in 1970 to provide Reformed Christian education for the children of the Canadian Reformed Churches in the area.
The school has about 280 students, according to its website, and provides education from Kindergarten to Grade 7. The note does not mention if the closure is due to transmission worries or lack of available staff, as was the case when Mt. Cheam Christian in Chilliwack temporarily closed earlier this year.
The website also notes the connection between the school and local churches that have been in the news recently.
“The Reformed faith sets the tone in our school,” the website reads. “Most of our students and their families worship in a Canadian Reformed Church, while several attend a United Reformed, Free Reformed, or Protestant Reformed Church.”
Two Reformed faith churches in Chilliwack have continued to hold in-person services despite a public health order restricting such activities. Three Fraser Valley churches have now received more than $18,000 in fines for violating those orders.

John Calvin, however, is not the only school to be affected by COVID-19. As of Monday morning, nine public schools in the city had current COVID-19 exposures listed by Fraser Health, and Unity Christian is listed as having a seven-day long exposure, with the dates of Dec. 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 14 and 15.
In addition, an entire arts and tech cohort of 90 students at AD Rundle middle has been asked to self isolate over the holidays, and was also shut down just days before the Christmas break.
