City cashes in on protection fund

Armstrong inks three-year agreement for community protection funding

The City of Armstrong won’t say no to free cash.

Council unanimously agreed to have staff sign a three-year agreement to ensure it receives strategic community investment funds.

“This is a fund where we receive substantial sums of money, some years larger than others, from the small community protection grant,” said Coun. Kelly Rowe, chairperson of the city’s finance committee.

Armstrong will receive $710,846 this year, and $332,233 in 2013 and ‘14.

Chief financial officer Terry Martens, in a memo to council, suggest this year’s money be used for current and future road capital projects ($325,000), fire protection and inspection ($190,000), other services such as crime prevention, animal control and emergency program ($170,846) and $25,000 for a zoning bylaw re-write project.

In 2011, the city received $693,970, the majority of which went to parks and recreation, as well as to road capital project reserves.
