There will be a festive spirit on Enderby’s main street 12 months a year.
City council has agreed to keep the holiday lights on year-round on Cliff Avenue instead of just during Christmas.
“It will make the area look a little nicer,” said Mayor Howie Cyr.
“It may influence people to walk around in the evening and maybe do some shopping.”
The decision came after a request from some residents.
“We will carefully fill each tree or every other one depending on the number of lights,” states the neighbourhood group in a letter.
The estimated cost to keep the lights on year-round is $613.
“It will enhance the attractiveness of the downtown core, which is a key focus for both the Enderby and District Vitalization initiative and the integrated community sustainability plan,” said Tate Bengston, deputy chief administrative officer.
“Second, it will add light to the downtown core after dusk in a way that is more cost-effective than light standards while also being very energy efficient due to the LED technology and photosensitive timers.”
In a related matter, light standards have been installed at the Cornerstone Garden at George Street and Mill Avenue.
The project was organized by the Enderby Garden Club and assistance came from Telus, which provided a connection from its nearby building and covered the electricity charges.
“They went above and beyond and we really appreciate it,” said Cyr of Telus.
The lights will allow people to use the garden at night and a power outlet means events can be hosted there.
