If you have hazardous waste like pesticides hanging around your house and you don’t know how to get rid of it, here’s your chance.
The City of Chilliwack is holding its annual Hazardous Waste Day Oct. 3.
Residents from Chilliwack, Popkum, Bridal Falls, Cultus Lake/Columbia Valley, Harrison Hot Springs, the Chilliwack River Valley and Kent/Agassiz will be allowed to drop waste at the City of Chilliwack’s operations yard (44390 Luckakuck Way, near Heritage Park) between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

There is no charge, but proof of residency will be required and only household waste (not commercial) will be accepted.
In addition to pesticides and herbicides, the city will also accept the following:
– Paint, paint cans, aerosols, thinners and turpentine
– Used motor oil, filters, anti-freeze, brake and transmission fluid
– Car and household batteries
– Dark room (photography) chemicals
– Wood preservatives
– Concentrated acids
– Drain openers
– Oven/toilet bowl cleaners
– Bleach and spot removers
– Swimming pool chemicals
– Solvents
– Parts cleaners, rust removers and degreasers
– Propane tanks
– Old fluorescent light ballasts
– Smoke alarms and fire extinguishers
– Furniture polish and strippers
Waste will be disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner. While this service is free, the city asks for a donation to the Salvation Army in the form of cash or a non-perishable food item.
Items that won’t be accepted at the event include:
– Medications, vitamins and sharps (needles)
– Tires
– Commercial cylinders
– Asbestos and drywall
– Explosives
– Radioactive material
– Electronics
– Small appliances
– Agricultural, commercial or industrial waste
