The City of Nanaimo is seeking volunteers for its new economic development committee.
According to a press release, the city is asking for applications from exemplary leaders in the community to participate in the Economic Development Strategic Planning Committee. Chaired by Mayor Bill McKay, the committee will be tasked with drafting a new economic development strategy for Nanaimo, providing recommendations, and reporting to council at the conclusion of its work.
“I am very excited to get this work underway and will be working closely with staff as we initiate our process,” McKay said, in the release. “My focus over the coming days and weeks is to assist in sharing information with the community and encourage involvement from those who are in a strong position to participate and help shape the economic potential of Nanaimo.”
The city is specifically interested in representation from the following sectors: transportation and warehousing; construction; health care; tourism; labour market; manufacturing; renewable energy; education; technology; and commercial real estate.
“Creating the environment in which businesses can grow and thrive is a key priority,” said Amrit Manhas, the city’s economic development officer. “The process of undertaking a new economic development strategy will help galvanize the business community around a common economic vision and common goals.”
Deadline for submissions is June 12 at 4 p.m.
Individuals who want to be considered for this committee are invited to outline how they can contribute toward the creation of a new economic development strategy for the City of Nanaimo by downloading and completing the application form here: www.nanaimo.ca/goto/committeeapplication.
