City of Parksville takes a step toward housing strategy

Coun. Kim Burden said less than 20 per cent of of the housing market in the city is available for rent - provincial average is 43 per cent

The City of Parksville is going to look at how the tight rental housing situation here can be addressed.

Councillor Kim Burden raised the issue at a council meeting Monday night.

“Parksville has a severe shortage of rental housing,” said Burden. “We need to explore more about what local government can do.”

Burden said less than 20 per cent of the housing market in the city is available for rent. He said the provincial average is 43 per cent.

Coun. Kirk Oates agreed.

“We hear a lot of talk — we need to do something,” said Oates. Burden’s motion Monday night asked only for staff to prepare a report on the methodology of creating a comprehensive housing strategy, to be delivered by March 15, 2017. It passed unanimously.
