City of Vernon could cut committees

Council taking a look at committee structure to generate efficiencies

How the City of Vernon operates could be pared back.

Council is debating its committee structure and a decision on whether some committees are cut could be made today.

“We’ve been interested in rationalization of the committee process for some time,” said Mayor Rob Sawatzky.

In recent years, the number of committees has climbed from five to about 20. They range from accessibility and economic development to environmental, parking and transportation demand management.

“They take a lot of staff and council work,” said Sawatzky, adding that issue of committees was raised by KPMG in the core services review.

“We want to make them more efficient while providing the services the committees provide.”

Sawatzky would not speculate on what committees may be eliminated, if any.
