City plans to board up problem property on Winnipeg Street

City of Penticton bylaw, RCMP and the fire department did an inspection recently of the property

RCMP, City of Penticton bylaw and the Penticton Fire Department attended a “known problem property” on Winnipeg Street on Wednesday.

According to Tina Siebert, bylaw supervisor, the property owner served an order of possession of the property recently as the tenants would not vacate.

Bylaw, RCMP and the fire department did an inspection of the 377 Winnipeg St. property on Thursday and determined that there continues to be Good Neighbour Bylaw issues, fire and Life Safety Bylaw issues.

Earlier this year, a neighbouring landlord called for the city to step up enforcement after, what he called, a “significant increase in unacceptable behaviour.” Residents of the house said they were being vilified by the media.

As well, power was shut off to the Winnipeg Street house earlier this year and residents had been using kerosene heaters and a portable generator for electricity. Water for the property was also shut off.

Siebert said one tenant remained inside the property on Thursday but indicated they will be vacating soon. She added enforcement partners have another inspection planned soon and the city plans to board up the property once the tenant has vacated and arrange for a clean up.

Regular private security patrols have been arranged to mitigate issues around the property.
