City pursues business recycling

Enderby merchants may eventually be able to take their recyclables out to the curb.

Council will ask the Regional District of the North Okanagan to consider establishing a blue bag collection program for businesses in the city.

“Businesses have been asking for it,” said Coun. Earl Shipmaker, who isn’t sure how most merchants currently dispose of paper, cardboard and other items.

“A lot of it possibly gets burned or thrown away.”

One of the goals of the potential program would be to divert items away from the landfills, extending the longevity of those facilities.

RDNO has currently developed a draft 2001 solid waste management plan, which looks at issues like recycling.

The draft plan calls for the district to investigate the implementation of a region-wide blue bag recycling program for businesses within three years.

There is no timeline for businesses in Enderby to access a curbside collection program but Shipmaker says the concept will largely depend on the ultimate cost.

And he doesn’t believe the proposed service should be onerous on businesses.

“Residents pay so much for their blue bag program so why not just include businesses if the collection contractor is running around?” he said.
