City seeks grant

Enderby council will apply for a B.C. Hydro grant to place power lines underground

The City of Enderby hopes to plug into some high-wattage funding.

Council will apply for a B.C. Hydro grant to place power lines underground on Mill Avenue, from George to Maud streets, and on Belvedere Street, from Cliff to Mill avenues.

“It gets rid of unsightly poles and cleans things up,” said Mayor Howie Cyr.

The cost of the project is not known at this time as B.C. Hydro must determine those figures.

But if Hydro agrees to the grant, it would provide one-third of the money while the city would be responsible for the remaining two-thirds.

“These roads are within the commercial core and close to a lighted intersection which makes tem high-profile candidates suitable for this kind of beautification,” said Tate Bengston, the city’s deputy chief administrative officer.

If the project proceeds, it would occur during sewer and road upgrades in 2014.
