The City of Prince Rupert is undertaking a cleanup of Bunker C oil tanks in Moresby Park.
During a routine inspection, it was noted that a small amount of contaminated rainwater had escaped from a minor tear in the tank, the result of a fallen tree. The oil leak was immediately caught and contained prior to any environmental impact and the Ministry of Environment and Department of Fisheries and Oceans were notified.
The city will now be seeking proposals from qualified contractors through a competitive bid process to decommission the damaged tank and others located in the park.
“It’s time to take action. These tanks have been here since WWII. It’s time for us to get on top of these longstanding issues in the community,” said Mayor Lee Brain.
These tanks of Bunker C oil are a relic of WWII, when the United States Department of National Defense (DND) used Prince Rupert as a military outpost.
