Clean up opens new trail network

Jack Cook students led the clean up of the bike park on Tetrault Road this week

Terrace B.C. cyclists now have a new circuit of bike trails to ride, thanks to clean up work led by the Jack Cook School.

Grade K-1 students from the school, along with help from a Grade 11 class from Caledonia Secondary School, were out this afternoon finishing the clean up of the bike park by Tetrault Road just south of the hospital.

Led by Jack Cook teacher Cindy Drouin, the work involved help from Kleanza Construction and Geier Waste Service, and the park trails are now cleaned up and ready to ride.

Mme. Drouin says it was a great community effort.

“We had no problem to find volunteers from school families to help us out with the cleaning,” she said, adding that it was also great to have the Caledonia outdoor education students jump in to help.

The Terrace Offroad Cycling Association chipped in by contributing tools for the students to use.

The project started last week Friday, June 9, funded through a $500 grant from the French teachers union (SEPF or Syndicat des enseignants et enseignantes du programme francophone de la Colombie Britannique), and a small donation to cover the garbage tipping fee from the Coast Mountains School District.

Kleanza brought out their machines and Geier Waste came and dealt with the organic waste, a key contribution because of the stumps, branches and dirt that had to be dealt with.

“Without their involvement we would not be able to do it,” said Drouin.

Now students and Terrace cyclists can enjoy the trail network safely, she added.
