Threatening clouds that had earlier dumped significant rain on Oceanside began to part as the Qualicum Beach Airport Appreciation Day kicked off Saturday.

In response to the improving weather and the opportunity to see a local airshow up close and personal, residents and visitors alike streamed in to the airport grounds, turning what looked like a possible bust into a big hit, as hundreds of people slipped the surly bonds of earth — at least in their minds.

What they got were some eye-popping aerobatics, static displays of various aircraft, food, drink, airplane and helicopter rides and a chance to try their hand at using a flight simulator.

One of the highlights of the day came when the 442 Beaufort Squadron’s Buffalo aircraft, which, after demonstrating their short strip landing skills, saw the a crew member pop open a hatch on the top and wave a Vancouver Canucks flag to the crowd — who roared their approval.
