THE CO-OP building is down and gone but work still continues to clear away any contaminated soil from where a decaying oil tank was found underneath the ground during demolition.
An excavator dug out dirt from a large pit, carrying it to a front end loader, which hauled it to the opposite side of the co-op property to dump it.
A worker collected samples of dirt to be tested for any contamination.
The city bought the co-op building and land on Greig Ave. for $1 million in 2005.
An appraisal prepared for the city estimated the value of the property would increase by $475,000 if the building was first taken down.
The city had been under increasing criticism to deal with the building and property.
Attempts to sell the property had not met with success.
