Cobblestones on Museum Way in downtown Nanaimo were removed last week.
The stones, pried up from the road surface and stacked onto about 55 pallets weighing about 1,130 kilograms per pallet, will be reused elsewhere in the city, said William Cottrell, construction manager for Leuco Construction Inc., which carried out the work.
The cobblestones will be replaced with a stamped or textured road surface.
“Nanaimo has a number of places, such as crosswalks, that use cobblestones, but they can require a lot of maintenance,” Cottrell said.
