Submitted by the Sandspit Rod and Gun Club-Another great weekend of fishing and weather! A bit slow on Saturday and windy enough to keep most of the boats off the water, however Billy Y. managed to catch some and one of them is the biggest so far at 14 pounds. Sunday was a better day for fishing and weather with a bunch of fish weighed in and the shore fishers getting their share.A good weekend at ‘the Shack’ as Ray K. sold out of hamburgers early Sunday afternoon, the smokies and hot dogs kept things going till the end of the day. Ray’s Sunday sourdough pancake breakfast (8-11 am) continues to draw a good crowd and Doug and Linda keep the plates full and served to the waiting horde. Thank you to all the volunteers that help at ‘the Shack’.The weekend had its adventures it seems and most of them are tied to Billy Y. Seems on Saturday most of the boats stayed on shore but not Billy, however with the wind and waves he managed to break a tail light off the trailer and a fishing rod. On Sunday as he was driving to Copper Bay to catch the early bite he spotted a fishing rod and reel along the gravel road. He picked it up and unsure whether to catch the early bite or find the owner, he turned the rod and reel in at the end of the day. If the competition’s rod and reel are down, take it – right Billy! It is not all luck and skill that wins the Derby. The owner of the rod and reel, after some stress of realizing it was gone and thinking the worst, was much relieved and thankful to get it back, thanks Billy! The halfway standingsBill Yovanovich 14 lbs.Alex Matson 13 lbs. 10 oz.Annie Schabernak 12 lbs. 10 oz.Tyler Jones 12 lbs. 3 oz.Berta Wagenstein 11 lbs. 15 oz.Cam Leslie 11 lbs. 10 oz.Shain Olson 11 lbs. 5 oz.Kim Goetzinger 11 lbs. 4 oz.Dana Jordon 11 lbs. 2 oz.Mike Leslie 10 lbs. 10 oz.Top LadyAnnie Schabernak 12 lbs. 10 oz.Berta Wagenstein 11 lbs. 15 oz.JuniorsDave Putterill 12 lbs. 12 oz.Matt Servatius 9 lbs. 4 oz.Weekend WinnersBill Yovanovich 14 lbs.(Jrs.) Make sure and check into ‘the Shack’ as Ray K. promises more and lots of his stuff for the next weekend. It’s nice to see old friends that come back for the derby and even participate. Good to see new names amongst the familiar names on the board and there is room for yours. Enjoy the Derby as the second half begins and may the ‘braggin rights’ be yours!
