Coldstream council has unanimously approved a 2014 tax exemption bylaw that would benefit a number of properties and organizations.

Non-profit organizations given tax exemptions next year include the Lavington Community Association, Canadian Mental Health Association, Kindale Developmental Association, Coldtream Women’s Institute, Mackie Lake House Foundation, Bishop Wild Bird Foundation, Vernon and District Riding Club and North Okanagan Community Life Society.

Churches exempt from paying taxes in 2014 include the Coldstream Christian Church, Ukrainian Episcopal, Lavington Fellowship Baptist Church and Roman Catholic Church.

“The groups that apply for them (exemptions) and are considered are organizations that provide a community benefit,” said Coldstream administrative officer Trevor Seibel. “That’s the whole gist of the legislation as to why local governments can consider them.”

Several parcels of property were also given exemptions including Kal Beach, its parking lot and concession, the Vernon Creek Control Gate, Westkal Beach, City of Vernon Water Reservoir and the Kal Lake Pump House.

The exemptions were granted unanimously though Couns. Maria Besso and Richard Enns excused themselves from the discussion due to potential conflicts of interest, and Coun. Peter McClean was absent from the meeting.

There were no new groups or organizations awarded exemptions in 2014.
