Coldstream is paying tribute to a community leader by rallying around the Canadian flag.

The district will provide the Vernon Canada Day committee with $500 for this year’s festivities.

“I wanted to support it because of Patrick,” said Coun. Pat Cochrane, referring to Patrick Nicol, a Vernon councillor and long-time Canada Day chairperson, who died earlier this year.

“He put his heart and soul into Canada Day.”

Coldstream has previously supported the July 1 celebrations financially.

“It’s a regional event,” said Cochrane, adding that many Coldstream residents take part in the activities.

The Regional District of North Okanagan recently provided $2,000 for the Canada Day event in Polson Park and the City of Vernon has committed $1,000 as well as support from city staff.

“Over the past few years, Patrick has contributed not only his time, but a significant amount of money to make this event a success,” states a letter from the Canada Day committee.

“With his passing, the committee is struggling to find funding to keep this event successful. The committee will be forming a society to deal with this event and fundraising for it in the future, but this is a transitional year and we need help.”
