Collision near Sparwood closed Highway 43 on July 19

On July 19, the Elk Valley RCMP responded to a report of a serious collision on Highway 43.

On July 19, the Elk Valley RCMP responded to a report of a serious collision on Highway 43, near Upper Elk Valley Road and Line Creek Mine Road near Sparwood. According to a statement released by the RCMP, the accident occurred at approximately 1:50 p.m.

“A Chevrolet pick-up truck driven by a male in his late 50’s was travelling north bound on Highway 43 in Sparwood had reportedly collided with a semi tractor cube van that was travelling south bound,” said the RCMP’s release. “The driver of the pick-up was trapped in the pick-up truck for approximately one hour before being extracted.”

STARS was activated to airlift the man to a Calgary hospital, where he was reported to have a broken arm, but otherwise is in stable condition. The driver of the semi tractor cube van, who was reported to be in his mid 20’s, was taken to the Sparwood hospital. He was released later that day.

Due to the accident, Highway 43 was shut down in both directions, opening roughly two hours after the crash.
