SURREY — Communities and Coal is hosting two candidate forums on the controversial issues of thermal coal in B.C.’s communities.
One is set for the South Surrey-White Rock riding on June 24 at 7 p.m. at Ocean Park Community Hall (1577 128th St.), and the other is planned in North Delta on June 26 at 7 p.m. at Trinity Church (11040 River Rd.) for the Delta and Surrey Centre ridings.
Candidates in the four major parties have been invited to both events.
Paula Williams, co-founder of the community group challenging Port Metro Vancouver in federal court over the coal permit approval at Fraser Surrey Docks, says their group invited MP candidates in the upcoming 2015 federal election to discuss their position in the matter.
“It is an excellent opportunity for candidates to not only share their ideas, but for them to hear directly from people who might not be voting for them,†said Williams.
“This election is only four months away and in these neighbourhoods, this topic is one which is front and centre.â€
Nick Mullins, former U.S. coal miner turned climate change activist, will speak at both events on his “Breaking Clean†tour.
