The springtime contest encouraging people to primp and prune their premises is making a comeback in Maple Ridge.
The Communities in Bloom contest has two people who want to revive the event after it withered in 2005.
According to a staff report, the event drew a variety of groups together, such as the Alouette River Management Society, the CEED Centre and the Maple Ridge Gardening Club, all in an attempt to beautify the district’s gardens and public spaces.
Maple Ridge’s landscaping and gardening efforts then will be judged in July, along with similar sized communities throughout B.C.
“This was really a successful program 20 years ago,” said Mayor Ernie Daykin.
But the program needs leaders to make it successful, he added.
Those leaders are now Cyndy McCormick and Charlotte Mitchell, who are chairing the Maple Ridge Communities in Bloom committee.
To participate, the committee needs $4,000 from parks and leisure services budget to pay for judges visits, awards and other costs. That money will come from funds left over in that provided for the bear aware program.
Council will decide later if it wants to approve the money.
The last time Maple Ridge participated, two public areas were beautified thanks to the help of businesses and volunteers.
