Community garden would mesh with Telkwa sustainability plan

Telkwa Village Council recently considered a proposal from the Telkwa Community Initiatives Society (TCIS) that may eventually result in a community garden.

The TCIS mentioned in correspondence that they were acting as an umbrella organization for a community initiative to create at least one such garden. At a council meeting in early April, councillor Taylor Bachrach pointed out that local food initiatives figure prominently in the Integrated Community Sustainability Plan the village is currently working on.

Councillor Rick Fuerst agreed, pointing out that there seems to be strong interest in the idea.

“I think it’s a good initiative for Telkwa. I’ve heard strong interest in it from quite a few people,” he said.

Councillor Jim Hiltz brought up concerns that any community garden runs the risk of becoming an unmaintained eyesore if not properly looked after, but council generally agreed that could be worked into any potential agreement.

“I think if we structure it right and there’s an agreement to keep it up to a certain standard, it could be pretty positive,” said Bachrach.

Council voted to wait for the TCIS to come to council with a proposal, including any potential locations being looked at.
