Community member dies in crash

On Friday, January 14, local resident Randy Sulyma was tragically killed in a motor vehicle accident on Highway 97.

On Friday, January 14, local resident Randy Sulyma was tragically killed in a motor vehicle accident on Highway 97.

According to the RCMP report, at approximately 6 p.m., Chetwynd RCMP were called to the scene to investigate a head-on collision at Highway 97 and Hasler Flats, west of Chetwynd.

According to police, Sulyma’s vehicle was fish-tailing and crossed the highway into oncoming traffic, striking another truck travelling in the opposite direction.

Sulyma was pronounced dead on the scene and was the sole occupant of his vehicle. The two occupants of the other vehicle did not sustain any injuries.

The accident is believed to be due to poor weather and icy roads.

Sulyma was a forester who worked out of the Mackenzie forest district. He was active locally and was one of the speed skating coaches for Fort St. James.

He was traveling to a competition at the time of his accident. Sulyma is survived by his wife Sandra Sulyma and two children, Joel and Emily.

A service was held for Randy Sulyma at the high school gym on Saturday, January 22 at 12:30 p.m., after the paper went to press.
