Community policing rings up new number

Same building, new phone number.

The RCMP City of Vernon Community Policing office has noticed a drop in calls and the reason could be a change in phone number.

A year ago, the office’s phone system expanded when it was moved under the auspices of the City of Vernon.

The old number remained active for one year as calls were forwarded to the office.

“We know people are creatures of habit so they either have the old phone number written down by their phone, or the number is on their phone,” said RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk.

Now, when people call the old number, they get a message saying the number is no longer in service.

And the community policing office believes that may be the reason for their drop in call numbers.

“We’ve noticed quite a decrease in phone calls coming in,” said Molendyk. “Maybe people are thinking, ‘Oh, the office isn’t there anymore.’ We’re still in the same place (Coldstream Avenue), still very active with lots of volunteers. The number changed a year ago and maybe people aren’t up to speed on that.”

The new phone number for the RCMP City of Vernon Community Policing office is 250-550-7840, and it’s in the Vernon phone book.
