A man caught breaking into the Osoyoos and District Sanitary Landfill was sentenced to probation and community service Monday in Penticton court.
Noel Hansen, 41, pleaded guilty to one count of breaking and entering with the intent to commit an offence.
On June 24, 2016 RCMP were called to a break-in at the Osoyoos Landfill around 9 p.m. Police located a Honda Civic parked 30 feet away from a fence surrounding the landfill. Nearby, through a cut hole in the fence, police located a pile of metal items and nearly 20 automotive batteries.
Defence counsel James Pennington said his client was homeless at the time, living out of his car, and said Hansen was adamant he had no involvement in collecting the batteries.
Hansen received a suspended sentence, 12 months of probation and 15 hours of community work service.
