Salmon Arm citizens can pay their respects and share their grief and determination over Wednesday’s shooting in Ottawa at the Salmon Arm Cenotaph on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 10 a.m.
Organized as part of an national effort by veterans, Canadians from around the country plan to gather at cenotaphs across the country at 10 a.m. in a mass show of support and respect.
Al Williams, a Salmon Arm veteran, is part of an effort to spread the word about the service to help unite Canadians following the loss of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, who was shot while serving at the National War Memorial earlier this week. The alleged shooter then entered the Parliament Buildings and exchanged gunfire before being shot and killed.
“It’s a way to stand up and say this will not scare us. Canadians are proud, we will not give in,” he says.
The Salmon Arm Legion is also throwing its support behind the effort and the Sergeant-at-arms will be participating.
The event is still being hastily organized, but will likely feature the singing of O, Canada, a moment of silence and the playing of The Last Post. The Salmon Arm Cenotaph is located on 3rd Street SE and Okanagan Avenue, just west of Fletcher Park and City Hall.
“We would love to see the people of Salmon Arm come out,” says Williams. “Everyone is welcome.”
