Prior to their final readings of the budget next month, Comox council approved the financial plan and tax rates for a general municipal tax increase of 3.3 per cent at their committee of the whole meeting Wednesday.
The 2019 rates equate to a $48.92 general tax increase on the average single-family home within the town, explained Clive Freundlich, the director of finance for the town in his report to council.
The first three readings of the financial plan and tax rate bylaws are expected to be approved at the May 1 regular council meeting, with the final readings of the budget coming at the May 8 committee of the whole meeting.

Comox resident Andy Merrick is looking to honour the Town’s political history by naming a street after its third mayor.
In a letter to council, Merrick suggested either a street or park be named after Dick Merrick, who served the Town in the 1970s.
Merrick was instrumental in the completion of the Comox Municipal Marina, Marina Park, the D’Esterre House and the Comox Fire Hall, among others.
In the letter, Andy Merrick noted there is a precedent set, with streets within the town already named after Jack Noel and Ron Ellis.
Council voted unanimously to refer the request to staff.
