Uncertainty around travel for boaters leaving harbour getting ready for all conditions

Those at the Comox Valley Harbour Authority are preparing for what may be another busy summer, but are also getting ready for the uncertainty of what the season may bring.

Leslie Taylor, manager of the CVHA said last summer the harbour was “very busy,” despite travel restrictions. Generally, 50 per cent of their traffic during travel season comes from the United States, but last year many locals kept their boats at the harbour.

“We were busy and ended up having a pretty successful year,” she explained.

The Comox Harbour is home to both a large commercial fishing fleet along with pleasure craft. In mid-May, the commercial fleet leaves the dock for fishing and returns mid-September, which allows 1,200 ft of dock dedicated to visiting pleasure craft.

Taylor said the increased traffic was a surprise, and this year the CVHA is prepared for what the season – and COVID-19 travel restrictions – might bring.

“There’s been lots of people from B.C. and a lot of people buying and selling boats … (so) we’re not sure what to expect this year.”

Following a report of a stolen boat, Taylor noted the harbour authority has taken proactive security measures and has installed cameras throughout the area. While the area is generally busy, she said both staff and users are happy to have the cameras in place, particularly for the upcoming summer season.
