Conservation officers were pursuing a cougar after another spotting of the animal in Coldstream Thursday.
Officers have received about six or seven calls about the animal since Christmas.
“We are in the area of Kidston Road and Kinloch Drive,” said Sgt. Josh Lockwood of the North Okanagan conservation office Thursday afternoon.
“We’re asking the public to be vigilant in that area as well as the area near Kal Lake Provincial Park. We’ve set some traps in those areas where the cougar killed a raccoon.”
Officials are asking the public to keep dogs on a leash and not let dogs roam around in the area.
Adults are asked to keep small children walking with them close.
If you do spot a cougar, Lockwood said be aggressive.
“Yell and make yourself as large as possible,” he said. “Bear spray also works on cougars.”
As of Thursday, it was believed the cougar had only preyed on area wildlife, not any free roaming house pets.
“For public safety reasons, we’re going to remove it (cougar),” said Lockwood.
