The $39-million contract for the new Kelowna Police Services Building has been awarded to Bird Design-Build Construction Inc.
The contract includes the design and construction of the new 100,000-square-foot police services building at the corner of Clement Avenue and Richter Street. The total project budget is $48 million for the new centralized facility to accommodate enhanced operations, install necessary policing technologies and meet future expansion as the city continues to grow.
After a four-month design process by three pre-qualified design-build teams, Bird Design-Build Construction Inc. was selected as having the preferred submission.
“A Design-Build selection process was used on this project in order to address the extensive and detailed requirements for this high-security facility in a way that ensured a strong control over project costs,” said project manager, Andrew Gibbs, in a press release.
“Technical input by specialist consultants and contractors, including extensive consultation with the RCMP, has contributed to the quality of this selection process and will result in a facility that will serve the detachment and the community very well for many years to come.”
In the 2015 Citizen Survey, 94 per cent of residents said they feel Kelowna is safe and the City wants to keep it that way. The Police Services Building Project borrowing is included in this year’s budget, with more than one-half of the 2015 tax demand allocated to protective services costs. Repayment of the $42-million municipal loan will occur over the next 30 years and be part of future budgets.
Construction is expected to begin this summer with completion scheduled for spring 2017.
