The City of Rossland has awarded a $174,000 contract to upgrade a section of the Wagon Road trail.
Double Barrel Industries of Grindrod had the lower of two bids and will do the work. Copcan’s bid was $224,000.
The bulk of the project will be paid for through a provincial grant of $132,000. The city expected to kick in $20,000, leaving a shortfall of $22,000. Council approved extra funding to get the job done, which will come from other capital projects that are under budget or will not be completed this year.
The project is the first phase on what has been dubbed the South Kootenay Green Link Trail and involves improving a 700-meter section of the wagon road from the end of Esling Drive to Redstone Drive to better accommodate cyclists. The intent is to eventually improve the entire trail and see a green link stretching from Rossland to Fruitvale.
