The BC Wildfire Service is preparing to conduct an aerial planned ignition on the Trozzo Creek wildfire on August 12 or August 13, according to a news release.
Smoke will be visible from Winlaw, Slocan, Highway 6 and surrounding areas.
The exact timing of the planned ignition will depend on weather and site conditions, but could begin as early as today (Thursday).
“The fire is currently burning in inaccessible terrain on the south side of the Lemon Creek drainage,” the news release states. “The purpose of the 40-hectare burn is to bring the fire’s edge to pre-existing control lines where crews can safely work.”
The planned ignition will be monitored closely by BC Wildfire Service crews. Ground crews, hoselays, sprinklers, and helicopters will be on-site to support the operation.
Aerial ignitions use plastic sphere dispensers (PSDs) and heli-torches. The PSD is mounted to a helicopter and accurately deploys golf-ball-sized plastic spheres onto the landscape. Through a chemical reaction, the spheres ignite shortly after they reach the forest floor.
