Upgrades to Cook Street between Quadra Street and Maplewood Road will be underway soon after council awarded a $4.8 million contract to Brunnell Construction Ltd. on Monday.
“It will be our complete streets design that’s gone through community consultation, where we are doing a complete rebuild above and below the surface,” said Mayor Frank Leonard.
Upgrades will include 870 metres of new sidewalks, multiple corner ramps, new painted bike lanes, improved stormwater management and landscaped boulevards.
“It will be a much safer environment for cars, pedestrians and cyclists, and it will incorporate a green environment,” Leonard added.
“What people won’t see is underground it will be a whole new infrastructure as well.”
The contract bid from Brunnell Construction Ltd. was about $200,000 less than the closest competing proponent, and the project is being funded through the district’s Transportation, Drainage, Sewer and Water budgets.
“The sidewalk’s in pretty rough shape,” Leonard said. “It’s quite overdue.”
Sewage pipes contract worth $1.5 million
Council also awarded a contract to replace wood stave, storm drain and sanitary sewer pipes on Monday.
Scansa Construction Ltd. was the sole bidder on the $1.48 million contract, which was about seven per cent higher than estimates submitted by an external consultant. The work is slated for three locations in the district.
