The Cops for Kids Ride made a pit stop in Golden on September 22. The Annual Cops for Kids Ride is the main fundraising event for Cops for Kids. The organization is dedicated to aiding children with physical, medical and traumatic crisis.
The Cops for Kids Ride consists of 11 days of biking through the Southern Interior of British Columbia and stopping in various communities that are supported by RCMP and Cops for Kids.
During the past few months Michael Hull, Golden’s rider, has been raising funds and awareness for the organization. One of his events was Buzz the Fuzz, where he presented $5000 to Michaela Dunn and Sydney Mitchell on behalf of Cops for Kids. Both girls have heart conditions and Mitchell is currently in the Children’s Hospital in Edmonton due to her’s. Cops for Kids is continuing to help support the family.
As the riders cycled through town, they were greeted by Mitchell’s classmates who rode along in support of the riders and their young friend.
“I thought it was really nice that the class came out to support Sydney. She is in Edmonton and I know she is going through a tough time,” Hull said.
The group of cyclists stopped at Sobeys where a barbecue put on by the Lions Club and Golden Rotary awaited. All of the food from the barbecue was donated by Sobeys who welcomed the riders with open arms.
“We donated the food and drinks because it is a really good cause and we can help. There are kids and families out there and in our community going through hard times and we want to help support them,” Cam Dawes, Sobeys manager said.
During the barbecue, Hull gave a heartfelt thanks to his supporters.
“I felt really proud coming into Golden. It’s the first time the ride stopped here. I was proud of our detachment, we had the most members come out than any other detachment and that shows our commitment to the community,” Hull expressed.
Over $600 was raised at the barbecue, bringing Hull’s grand total to about $5,500. This year’s ride raised about $215,000 for Cops for Kids.
