The cost to license a dog that isn’t spayed or neutered is going up.
It will now cost $70 to obtain a licence for an “unaltered” dog. The Fraser Valley Regional District’s board approved the hike last week. Unaltered licences had cost $56 in Abbotsford and Mission, and $50 in Kent and Harrison. Chilliwack had already charged $70 for such dogs.
Licences for spayed and neutered dogs will rise only in Chilliwack, increasing from $15 to $20. The cost was already $20 in Kent and Harrison, while Abbotsford and Mission residents will continue paying $28.
Licence fees are due before Jan. 1 and a six-week grace period that had previously been offered will no longer be available.
Abbotsford Coun. Patricia Ross, who is vice-chair of the FVRD board of directors, said the aim is to encourage owners to spay and neuter their animals while bringing fees closer to alignment across the region.
