Cougar targets goats

Three goats killed by a cougar near Swan Lake has prompted a warning for livestock and pet owners

Three goats killed by a cougar near Swan Lake has prompted a warning for livestock and pet owners.

Traps have been set and a camera was installed in the area following the Monday incident around L&A and Pleasant Valley Road in a semi rural area.

“We just checked the traps and the camera and it doesn’t appear the cougar has been back,” said CO Terry Myroniuk. “But we’re still urging people in the area to utilize good husbandry practices, particularly bringing in pets and livestock at night to keep them safe.

“It is a natural area where cougars will pass on occasion so people need to be mindful of that and to protect their pets regardless if they know a cougar to be in the area at a particular time.”

As CO’s have seen in the past, once a cougar starts to feed on livestock they generally will repeat the pattern, said Myroniuk.

This is one of several sightings in the past month.

“Probably two or three weeks ago there was a sighting up near a school up in this area as well,” he said of the cougar spotted near Coldstream Elementary. “Other than those couple of events there hasn’t been a lot of activity.”

A cougar was destroyed in Armstrong after going after livestock on May 28, according to WildSafeBC. The same day another cougar was seen going after pets and livestock in Lumby.
