Coun. Rob Martin enters Colwood mayoral race

Martin hopes to focus on affordability, transportation, and truth and reconciliation

There will be a new face running for mayor in the City of Colwood.

Coun. Rob Martin has announced he will be running for Colwood’s top political job in the municipal election later this year. The two-term councillor believes Colwood is at a pivotal time in its history and would like to have a hand in shaping its future.

“I love being a councillor. The work is engaging. I really want to spend the next six months working on some projects that I am excited about,” Martin said in a statement. “I really believe the best way to campaign is to show it through my works, not just my words.”

Martin was first elected to council seven years ago. In the 2014 municipal election, Martin was elected with 1,896 votes. Since then, he’s become an active member of the Colwood Emergency Preparation Committee and served as the board chair of Westshore Parks and Recreation Society from 2012 to 2016. Most recently, he was re-elected as board chair of the Greater Victoria Public Library.

If elected mayor, Martin said he will focus on affordability and will be a strong voice throughout the ongoing disposition process of Royal Roads lands, involving First Nations groups and the Department of National Defence.

He also hopes to move forward on transportation issues and is dedicated to ensuring the continued prosperity and viability of West Shore Parks and Recreation.

In the coming months, Martin said he, along with others running for municipal office, will be listening to residents’ concerns ahead of the Oct. 20 election.
