A tent to house Olympic rowers will be erected at Camosun College’s Interurban campus after council unanimously approved the temporary training facility Monday night.
Councillors, however, told representatives from the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence that as facilities grow on site, a new traffic demand management plan must be done to alleviate vehicle congestion in the area, specifically at the nearby intersection of Wilkinson and Interurban roads.
There’s no date yet for when the 232-square-metre tent structure will
be erected. Once it’s up, it will house ergometers (rowing machines) to be used by athletes training for the London 2012 Olympics.
Robert Bettauer, CEO of PISE, said there are plans for more permanent buildings on site, which would include dedicated rowing space, hence the “temporary” recommendation.
