It took some debate for Courtenay council to unanimously approve a resolution for Mayor Larry Jangula to sign the Community Justice Centre’s amended Critical Incident Response Protocol on behalf of council.

Though the spirit of the resolution is strong, Coun. Erik Eriksson feels it is not right to simply pay it lip service.

Jangula harbours some concern about council imposing morals on people.

Coun. Doug Hillian, who suggests the signing does not impose anything upon council, notes numerous Valley agencies and organizations have signed on.

“I would frankly be embarrassed if Courtenay declined to sign on and join with other community organizations to express in the highest aspirations for how we would like to see people treated in our community,” Hillian said.

•The City will host the 2016 Municipal Information Systems Association conference Sept. 19-22 at various locations. About 350 delegates and up to 80 vendors are expected.

•Council approved an application to allow an outdoor patio on a trial basis at the Avalanche Bar & Grill.

•Council approved a covenant agreement concerning the widening of Lerwick Road, which will establish a second southbound travel lane and a sidewalk on the west side of the street.
