Council briefs: Dragon Boats

Dragon Boats

Ted Crouch and other members of the team restoring the teak dragon boats presented council with an update on the project. The presenters detailed the skills participants learned over the course of the restoration process. About 1,100 hours goes into the restoration of each completed boat. Two of the boats will be displayed for public viewing in the former Sears location at the Mall at Piccadilly from noon to 2 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Voice of the Shuswap

Warren Bell presented to council requesting a stable source of funding to cover the operating costs of CKVS-FM 93.7, the Voice of the Shuswap community radio station.

Bell focused on the station’s history and the ways it serves the community. He requested $20,000 per year beginning with the city’s 2017 budget. Coun. Alan Harrison said the city would likely be unable to fund the station’s operating costs

SASCU strategic plan

Salmon Arm Savings and Credit Union (SASCU) CEO Barry Delaney presented SASCU’s plan to host a community consultation to get the public’s opinion on how they operate. Feedback can be given through a link on SASCU’s website.

South Canoe School

Council voted to approve a bylaw allowing them to purchase the former South Canoe Elementary School. The bylaw will be rescinded at a later date if the Agricultural Land Commission will not approve non-farm use for the property.

Dancing

Council voted to approve a liquor license change for the Cantina Vallarta restaurant that was referred to them by the provincial government. The changed liquor licence will allow patron participant entrainment, in this case salsa dancing to take place on the premises.
